TURKISH BATH CULTURE Hamam "HAMAMI"

Save this article to your travelbook

A “Hamam” or Turkish bath is different from a Europe “Sauna” or if you know the Hungarian Latain-Turkey bath. It is a variant of a steam bath with a big warm / hot marble table in the middle, washing areas around the walls and a wee bit more warm separate rooms in one or tow corners. The humidity is wee bit higher so that you are getting wet.
The procedure is running like perspire in the warmer area or on the marble table (before move between warm and hot rooms splashing themselves with cold water)
have a massage where they peeling also your skin. (The time depends on the money that you are going to pay extra, in the entry price there is a massage for 10-15min but you can always extend for an additional payment after finishing. The masseur is not that highly paid so that between 5 and 10YTL should be ok)
After that they are going to wash you. At first the hair inclusive the head massage and then the full body wash.
If they finished you are having enough time for relaxing on the table and they are going to offer some refreshments or tea.
The session will finish if you leaf the room. They are going to dry and wrap you in towels and put you in your small room where you can relax.

In the German wikipedia I found that beautiful description out of a letter:

Marmara Pera

The Marmara hotels are in Taksim. There is one named Istanbul directly on the Taksim square and 20 min down the Tarlabasi Cad. direction bridge the Pera. The prices for both are nearly the same. With a company rate you are starting around 100Euro per night. But I could recommend from both the panorama restaurant and bars. From the Pera the view is better and they are also having a pool on the roof. (I will be back if it is warmer)
The drinks are a wee bit higher charged then in ordinary bars or restaurents. For strong alcoholic dings it will be around 10 Euro and soft around 6. But the view and also the bar it’s quite nice. There is also a DJ on turn tables. The music was also ok sometimes they were drifting a wee bit often from lounge and Latin direction soft and love.

TAXI

TAXI
Yellow Taxis are waiting for you on every corner and compared to Europe they are quite cheap. For instance a taxi from the Istanbul airport cost around 25 Euro for around 17km. Important to know is that the driver is able to switch the taximeter from day (6-24) “gündüz” to night (24-6) “gece”. At night the price is 50% higher then on the day. The most of taxi drivers are only accepting cash payments. The best way to drive taxi is to negotiate the price before and to ask also for an invoice in front if you need one.

From the Istanbul airport are also running shuttle services to the city centre Taxim for 7Euro per person every 30minutes.
Istanbul is having a quite bad public transport system that is mostly based on buses. The metro lines are quite new and short. There is also one metro that is connecting nearly the city centre with the airport. Feel free to comment that information with a detailed description.
I have never tried to figured out that possibility.
