It is an important junction for the Trans-Siberian Railway, one track goes to the south via Ulan-Bator (Mongolia) to Peking, the other one to the east via Tschita to Vladivostok or also tho China.
There are many wooden houses as they are in Irkutsk. The city center close to the trainstation is also wide but it appears much more compact.
Best sight in Ulan-Ude is the big statue of the head of Lenin at the middle of square Lenin.
