Uspenski Kathedrale

Die Uspenski Kirche ist eines der wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten in Helsinki. Sie wurde Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts aus rotem Ziegelstein errichtet und liegt auf einem Hügel der Halbinsel Katajanoka im Zentrum der Stadt.

Die Kirche gehört zur finnisch-orthodoxen Diözese Helsinki, die größte im westlichen Europa. Der Einfluß der russischen Herrschaft ist hier deutlich zu sehen.

Sibelius Monument

Das Sibelius Denkmal wurde zu Ehren des finnischen Komponisten Jean Sibelius aus 600 aneinander geschweißten Stahlröhren errichtet.
Seit 1967 steht es im Sibelius Park im Stadtteil Taka-Töölö und ist eine von vielen Touristenattraktionen von Helsinki.

Temppeliaukio

Die Temppeliaukio Kirche wurde 1969 durch die Gebrüder Timo und Tuomo Suomalian fertiggestellt und befindet sich im Stadtteil Töölö. Die Kirche wurde in Granitfelsen geschlagen und hat bis zum Kupferdach eine Höhe von 13 m. Die Kirche wird u.a. für Konzerte verwendet.

Für jeden Touristen ein Muß.

Arctic Circle and Santa Claus Office

Rovaniemi, die Hauptstadt von Lappland, ist schon einen Besuch wert, aber der Polarkreis und das Haus vom Weihnachtsmann sind m. E. das Highlight in Lappland.

Nur rund 8 km nördlich von Rovaniemi liegt das Haus vom Weihnachtsmann, in dem der Besucher ganzjährig den Weihnachtsmann antreffen kann. Vor allem zur Weihnachtszeit macht das Weihnachtsdorf Laune.

Des weiteren ist hier der Polarkreis, er trennt die Polargebiete von den gemäßigten Zonen.

Ab Rovaniemi beginnt das eigentliche Lappland, das ein Drittel von Finnland ausmacht und sehr dünn besiedelt ist.

Bomba

Bomba is in Ritoniemi, a part of Nurmes, ca. 2 km away from the city center to the east. This small village (constructed in 1978) is some kind of museum and also a spa ressort. They built some big old house in an traditional way. And this is also very the name "Bomba" comes from Jegor Bombin, a Russian, who constructed the biggest house in that style many many years ago.
The spa ressort has a nice terrace, there you can drink a cold beer. You can buy it in the restaurant and they will fill the beer in a plastic cup. It is not allowed to take the beer to the beach. But there is a nice view over the lake Pielinen.

Finland was a province and then a grand duchy under Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries and an autonomous grand duchy of Russia after 1809. It won its complete independence in 1917. During World War II, it was able to successfully defend its freedom and resist invasions by the Soviet Union - albeit with some loss of territory. In the subsequent half century, the Finns made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999.

Ferries to Scandinavia

How to get there

By plane:
There are some reasonable priced flights operated by Finnair or Estonian Air from Germany to Helsinki.

By car:
There is one route via Russia (about 3000 km coming from Germany) and another route via Sweden.

By ferry:
Superfast ferries has a route from Rostock to Hanko. You should book some weeks in advance, because in summer they are often fully booked.
There are many ferries going from Sweden to Finland. The route in the north from Umea to Vaasa is operated by RG Line.

Another interesting possibility is to go to Tallin (cheap flights by EasyJet or Estonian Air) and from there by ferry (1,5 h) to Helsinki.
