...to "tierra del fuego"?
The easiest way to visit "the land of fire" is to take the ferry from Punta Arenas to Bahia Chilota (Porvenir). The trip is about 2 hours and will cost approximately 6 US$ p.p. You will have time to walk along the beach, visit Porvenir and return on the same ferry a few hours later.

Cementerio Municipal is home to the extravagant marmoreal mausoleum of José Menéndez, José Nogueira, Sara Braun and multinational immigrants who worked for them — English, Scots, Welsh, Croats, Germans, and Scandinavians.
The site is classified "national monument".

Penguin Colony

Save this article to your travelbook

The area of Punta Arenas is home to two of the largest penguin colonies in southern Chile. Every year, from November through January, some 150,000 magellanic penguins, arrive at the Seno Otway (Otway Sound) and on Isla Magdalena on the Chilean coast.

Seno Otaway is about 134 km in north of P. Arenas and easy to reach via 'Ruta 9'. Follow the signs to Kon Aiken and, after 13 km, you will find the Pinguinera.
Best time for "penguin watching" is in the afternoon when the birds return from fishing.

Tour operators in Punta Arenas offer trips to both colonies.
