The World Factbook says:

Australia became a commonwealth of the British Empire in 1901. It was able to take advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef. A referendum to change Australia's status, from a commonwealth headed by the British monarch to an independent republic, was defeated in 1999.

Visas

Everyone who does not hold an Australian or New Zealand passport requires a visa to enter and spend time in Australia. Visas are available from Australian visa offices such as Australian Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates as well as travel agents and airlines in certain countries.

The new service is called eVisa, and is available from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) website www.immi.gov.au. Travellers holding the following passports may apply for an ETA:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France,
Germany, Greece, Hong Kong SAR, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein,
Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore,
South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States Of America, Vatican City.

If you are coming to Australia as a tourist, your travel agent may be able to make all your travel arrangements, including obtaining a visa or an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority).

Tipping

Tipping is not the general custom in Australia and service charges are not normally added to accounts by hotels and restaurants. In better-class restaurants, it is usual to tip food and drink waiters up to 10 per cent of the bill for good service, but at any time, tipping is entirely optional.
